When most people think of Californian summer vacations, they automatically picture Lake Tahoe or Napa Valley. Well, we’re here to make a case for Sonoma County to be your getaway this summer! Not only is Sonoma County less crowded, but it also has just as much to offer as the other popular California destinations! Here are seven undeniable reasons why you need to visit Sonoma County this summer.
1. Award-Winning Wineries
Well, you can’t have a list about Sonoma County and not mention the wine scene. This region has some of the best award-winning wineries in the nation! Sonoma Valley has many microclimates, allowing the area to produce various wine types, including Cabernat, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel.
There are over 400 wineries in the area, ranging from smaller family-run wineries to world-renown estates. You can book a wine tasting tour bus, bike between wineries, or even walk between some!
Some of our favorite wineries to visit are La Crema, Chateau St. Jean, Iron Horse, and St. Francis.
Fun fact: Iron Horse’s bubbles have been served at the White House for the past five administrations!
2. Farm-to-Table Food Scene
To complement its wine scene, Sonoma County also has a superb food scene. In particular, the abundance of farms in the area makes this a famous farm-to-table region. Farms in this area produce olives, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and nuts. Additionally, the area produces handmade chocolate, cheeses, olive oil, craft beer, wine, and more. Just about everything you need for a delicious meal is available locally! And restaurants of all sizes – big and small – try to incorporate local ingredients into their menu.
We recommend Barndiva for the ultimate farm-to-table experience.
3. Outdoor Adventures
If you’re looking to enjoy the sunshine during your trip to Sonoma County, you’re in luck. There are plenty of outdoor adventures to try. First, you have to make your way to the Russian River, where you can canoe or kayak. You can also hike through the stunning redwood forests or conquer Hood Mountain. If you’re looking for views, visit the scenic Overlook Trail, Jack London State Historical Park, or Salt Point State Park.
What’s the perfect itinerary in Sonoma? Get outdoors in the mornings and get some activity in before you spend your afternoons and evenings drinking and eating!
4. The Coast
The Sonoma County Coast is absolutely breathtaking. You can go to Bodega Bay, Bodega Head, or North and South Salmon Creek. Enjoy a relaxing day sitting on the beach or views of amazing sunsets and sunrises at any of these locations.
5. Biplane Tours
Sonoma County is mainly known as a relaxing getaway, but you may be surprised to find some thrilling activities here too! If you’re an adventure-seeker, we highly recommend booking a biplane ride. From above, you can get the ultimate view of the wineries, farmlands, and valleys. Most of these plans only have room for two passengers and a pilot, so it’s also a very intimate and romantic experience.
6. The Art
Sonoma’s art scene may not be widely known, but it’s impressive nonetheless. There are private art galleries and an open-air theatre with plays throughout the summer. Additionally, you can visit the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, which typically features exhibitions of local and national artists.
And, of course, if you’re an art lover, you must visit the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center. You don’t need to be a fan of the Peanuts cartoons to appreciate and have fun at this Center. It’s the perfect activity for adults and children! Make sure to visit the Snoopy-themed cafe on your way out!
7. The Spas
Let’s face it – you’re probably going to Sonoma for both fun and relaxation. Well, the good news is that you can schedule plenty of luxury pampering during your visit. Treat yourself to a massage, facial, or an all-day spa package at some of the best rejuvenation spas in California. We recommend the MacArthur Place Garden Spa, Vi La Vita Spa, and The Lodge Spa.
